David McKenzie

David has over 20 years’ experience advising owners corporations, individuals, builders, developers, businesses, and local councils across a wide range of property matters. As an Accredited Specialist in Property Law (Victoria) his practice covers both contentious and non-contentious property work, including owners corporation disputes, building and construction matters, commercial and residential leasing, and the sale and purchase of property and businesses.

David is widely regarded for his strategic, commercially focused advice and his ability to translate complex legal and technical issues into clear, practical solutions. He regularly acts in high-stakes and complex disputes, including large-scale owners corporation litigation, property development defect claims, easement disputes, adverse possession matters, fencing disputes, and retail and commercial lease disputes.

He regularly represents clients before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Victorian Building Authority (VBA), and the Magistrates’, County, and Supreme Courts of Victoria.

David has also contributed at a policy level as a member of the expert panel reviewing the Owners Corporations Act 2006 (Vic), where he reported to the Minister for Consumer Affairs as part of the statutory review process.

David is recognised for excellence in Real Property Law in Best Lawyers in Australia (2021–2026).

David is also a regular speaker for the Australian Institute of Conveyancers, Legal Wise, The Education Network, and the Leo Cussen Centre for Law, and is widely respected for sharing practical insights drawn from decades of experience across law, technology, and industry.

EXPERIENCE

Before entering legal practice, David had a distinguished international career in mathematics, physics, and information technology, holding senior roles across government and commercial enterprises. He was involved in the design and implementation of some of the largest, fastest, and most secure computer systems globally, informing his analytical and problem-solving approach to complex disputes.
