Industry Insights

Australian governments have historically neglected manufacturing. Once the largest employing industry within Australia, manufacturing’s contribution to jobs and GDP have been in steady decline since the 1960s.

COVID-19 has highlighted serious manufacturing sovereignty issues in Australia. This has prompted the Federal Government (and some State Governments) to introduce major policy initiatives designed to ‘modernise’ manufacturing, make the sector more resilient and investment-ready, and increase our supply chain self-sufficiency.

Our clients need to engage with the government to ensure they receive the support promised in the 2020 budget. They must expand their distribution beyond wholesalers to an on-line market, ensuring cash flow, risk mitigation and future sustainability in a disrupted world. Research and development is incentivised by taxation law and supported with funding, allowing our clients to pivot for new business opportunities that arise in times of continuing uncertainty. It means their people structure, capital reserves and income streams will be different and they must develop a coherent strategy to adapt.

FCW Lawyers has been working closely with manufacturing clients, developing their online capability with appropriate terms and conditions. We have built COVID-safe plans, assisted with restructures, and ensured succession issues are managed effectively for the continuity and sustainability of the businesses
