Special Counsel

Peter is a technology and IP lawyer, and a qualified mechanical engineer, with a focus on extracting and consolidating value from IP. He is enthusiastic about the confluence of new technologies, good ideas, and the challenges and opportunities from disruption.

Peter negotiates and drafts deals at the interface of the creative and the commercial, mostly in the tech sector; Taking innovation to a commercial outcome by helping early-stage and high growth companies capture and control the high-value intangible assets. Creating wealth from good ideas and creative pursuits.

Peter advises on patents, copyright and licensing (including open-source software) issues for diverse projects involving industry and institutional (government/university) collaborations, open innovation, agile software development, IP management and strategy, e-commerce, IT procurement, commercial law, privacy, data protection and other issues relevant to the tech sector.

Experience
  • Working with R&D teams to commercialise cutting-edge inventions (from conception to production and distribution) involving data analytics, machine learning (A.I.), optimisation, communication networks, machine vision, photonics, clean energy, medical devices.
  • Advising on all IP aspects of integrating complex hardware, software (including OSS) and gateware, including the use of FPGAs and exploitation of IP cores.
  • Advising on technology and IP licensing issues for diverse projects involving industry and institutional collaborations, open innovation, software development, hardware development, medical devices, IP strategy, e-commerce, commercial law, privacy and social media issues for investors, incubators and spin-outs.
  • Advising on content creation and IP rights management and distribution for music, film, and video across all internet-enabled platforms in the media and entertainment sector.
Background

Prior to joining FCW Lawyers, Peter’s roles included being a lawyer at Aperion Law, IP Counsel for NICTA for 11 years before taking an in-house role at high growth technology startup Metamako (subsequently acquired by Arista Networks).
